Countering Fear-COVID-19

Updated: Jun 23, 2020

(Reflection of Christopher Russo, Assistant Superintendent in Portland and Reynolds and currently the Director of the American School of Asuncion, Paraguay.)

Inevitably, we all must come to terms with our fears, whether real or imaginary, and in those moments true mettle and resolve are tested of everyone in the organization. Our school has been preparing for an eventual outbreak (or better stated as an acknowledgement of a case of infection) for the past couple weeks. All of my international school colleagues from around the world are struggling to manage the same crisis and in times of need we have all come together to share and guide one another. We embrace learning from each other's challenges and successes in order to navigate the best course of action.

Over the weekend we had our first confirmed case of infection in Paraguay, and even though it's one case but it might as well signify 100. The news has had a reverberating effect. Thankfully we have plans in place, resources and personnel to support, and most importantly have been well-informed enough to be able to sort real from false.

My teachers were sober in response to the news and the initiation of the plan but resolved--exactly as they should be.

Humanity can and will shine and many of us will show our best face during the most difficult of times.
